Course Overview
This 2-day instructor-led course is designed to give Firefighters an in-depth understanding of the federal retirement system and what they should expect between now and retirement. This course will provide employees with an in-depth knowledge of retirement plans and benefits as it relates to Firefighters. Understanding how their benefits work in retirement allows employees to begin preparing for their future and making informed decisions. At the completion of this course, participants will be able to understand:
- Eligibility under “special category” and “covered position” provision
- Purpose of special provisions and determination of coverage
- Types of Special Retirement Positions and attached benefits.
- Transfer requirements (Direct Move, Primary Service and Continuous Employment)
- Creditable service and Creditable Service rules
- FERS, FERS Changeover and related retirement components.
- Annuity computation for Firefighters
- The retirement benefits including Social Security, Long-term care insurance, Thrift Savings Plan, Dental and Vision Insurance, Survivor Benefits, FEGLI, FEHB, TSP, LTC, etc.),
- Steps to enhance financial comfort and financial planning.
- Estate planning considerations.
- Tax and Legal Issues.
