Course Overview

This three-day course introduces participants to the fundamentals of the federal contracting process. From the earliest planning stages through solicitation, award, administration, and closeout, the course covers key best practices, roles and responsibilities, and the regulatory context. The content is geared toward individuals who support or participate in acquisition activities and need a solid grounding in how contracting works in the federal environment. At the completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Explain the purpose and structure of the federal acquisition/contracting system.
  • Identify and describe the major phases of a contract lifecycle (planning, solicitation & award, post-award, closeout).
  • Define and apply common contracting terms and the roles of key stakeholders.
  • Monitor contractor performance and understand when and how modifications may be needed.
  • Process and understand contract payments and invoice issues.
  • Recognize contract close-out requirements and document completion.
  • Understand ethical considerations and standards of conduct applicable to contracting personnel.

  • New or recently assigned contracting support staff, contract administrators, or acquisition team members.
  • Program/project officers, technical managers, budget/finance staff, and others who work with or alongside contracting professionals.
  • Anyone who needs a practical overview of contracting from a government-acquisition standpoint and wants to ensure safe compliance and effective oversight.
