Course Overview
This five day course provides a comprehensive introduction to computer networking and communications, covering both the theoretical foundations and practical aspects of modern networks. Students explore the full network stack, from the physical and data-link layers to transport and application layers, including LANs, WANs, routing, and virtual LANs. The course also addresses multimedia applications, network management, and security concepts such as cryptography. By blending conceptual understanding with real-world examples, the course prepares students to design, manage, and secure networks effectively. At the completion of this course, participants will be able to:
- Understand the core concepts and components of computer networks, including the OSI and TCP/IP models.
- Describe the functions of the physical, data-link, network, transport, and application layers.
- Explain LAN and WAN architectures, including connecting devices and virtual LANs.
- Understand routing principles and data transfer across networks.
- Discuss multimedia applications and their impact on network performance.
- Apply basic network management concepts and tools to monitor and troubleshoot networks.
- Explain cryptography principles and network security fundamentals to protect information.
