Cloud Computing Survey

The 2012 IT in the Cloud Assessment Project reports the majority of IT professionals want to move their applications to the cloud. Even more shocking, the top reason why they are planning to make this move is for better security.

Qumu, a video platform provider, organized the project and used the results found by leading independent online panel and survey company, Toluna.  Toluna surveyed 700 IT professionals on their views of cloud computing and their plans to use the infrastructure in the future.

These professionals stated cloud computing as having the following benefits:

  • Security
  • Cost savings after deployment
  • Time savings
  • Quick deployment
  • Environmentally friendly
  • Elasticity
  • Outsourced support and maintenance

44.4% of those surveyed stated these benefits as the reasons behind moving applications to the cloud within the year. Some even plan to move almost half of all their applications during this time frame.

Cloud computing is not a new concept; in fact, many organizations have already made the move to the cloud. However, security concerns and overall uncertainty regarding the cloud’s use and effectiveness have deterred many companies form making this leap. The release of this report seems to mark a new and permanent change in the IT infrastructure.

Large organizations are actively making this transition and accepting that the cloud is here to stay. The cloud computing options for these professionals are also increasing, the most notably being Microsoft’s contribution. Last week marked the company’s online launch of Windows Server 2012, with the very relevant theme, “built from the cloud up.”
